The Bigger Picture
Living out our faith means learning to flesh out truths of Scripture in the way that we understand and interpret culture. In this way, we learn how to be in the world but not of the world. It’s no exaggeration to say film is the pulpit of the twenty-first century, so as we seek to interact with our society, we view film through the lenses of Scripture.
In The Bigger Picture, we watch and discuss a film, thinking critically and testing it against the gospel, and in this way, we are learning to see every story in light of the bigger picture of the gospel of Jesus Christ. Because it’s the Christian’s calling to witness to the truth visible in culture, we view film and culture through the spectacles of God’s Word. Learn how to interpret the film for yourself.
What happens on a typical night?
We start with a brief introduction to the particular film we’re about to watch, pointing out themes that are relevant to the film. Then we pass the snacks around as we watch the movie together. Immediately following the film, there’s a short presentation that brings out some key messages and perspectives shown in the film. Finally, we discuss the message and relevance of the film as a group, testing its conformity to the truth of the gospel, and reimagining its story in light of the bigger picture. The discussion time in particular helps us to work out what it means to live faithfully in our culture, helping our students to sharpen their vision of our world with eyes of faith.
