Come Boldly – Book Review
Review Author: Barbara Hassan, Director of Operations, Unlocking the Bible
Book Author: Various
Having been raised in a Lutheran home, I was very familiar with prayer: The Lord’s Prayer was recited with great zeal in church every Sunday, and we said a prayer over every meal: Come, Lord Jesus, be our guest and let these gifts to us be blessed. AMEN – with emphasis on the AMEN!
I left the church when I was 20. Then after wandering in the wilderness for 30 years, I arrived at The Orchard where I first heard heartfelt prayer coming from the pulpit. I remember asking someone in the lobby where I could purchase the book the pastor was praying from. Needless to say, my prayer life needed help.
Last fall I saw Come Boldly in a publisher catalogue and the name intrigued me, because I was familiar with Hebrews 4:16. This book showed me why I needed to pray, what the content of my prayers should be like, what I needed to know about God, and how prayers can tap people that I don’t even know on the shoulder, and more, so much more.
Come Boldly contains 52 weeks of daily entries, plus one entry for each weekend, gleaned from the writings of the greats in preaching and teaching: Bonhoeffer, Bounds, Bunyan, Chambers, Spurgeon, Taylor, and Tozer – a total of 30 contributors.
You can read it day by day if you like. The messages are thought provoking and rich, and each is headed by a passage of Scripture. There are no dates involved, they are listed as week 1, week 2, and so on, so you can begin at any time. Or you might prefer to browse thru the table of contents and just get right into one that catches your eye like: Asking is Easy, or Work Less, Pray More.Tags: Prayer, Reccomended Reading
